Translational work

Since I’m home for the week, and didn’t feel like working on fansubbing (someday, I will, I promise, I suppose) I ended up doing some translation work :-D

To celebrate the fact, erm, kinda, I spruced up and organized the translations page a bit. It is now separated by language, and in the case of Spanish, by what they’re for. Tick Tock has their own section, as well as the songs for El Desafio.

You will notice a new section though – French! Yes, I actually attempted (and I think did well) at a French translation. You can find a translation of Grégoire’s Toi + Moi, as well as the music video, by clicking here. :)

The other new song is another on the El Desafio list. This time, I took care of the weird rugby (I think it’s rugby?) song, Siempre Juntos. It was oddly easy to do. Oo Check it out.

I’ve also been learning a LOT of stuff in my 301 class. Like how to deal with infinitives and stuff… especially subjunctive. One song I KNOW I need to take a look at when I have my class notes (for reference) is Cara Luna. So, I know this is wrong. :S

But in regards to revisions, I did go over Yo Sabía and made a few changes. One of the biggest is the translation for “La respuesta me la dio tu corazón”… I had it kinda backward :S Also fixed all my incorrect past participles of “dreamt” to “dreamed”… not quite sure how I got it in my head that dreamt was a word.

…I do think it sounds better though :)

If you dreamt with me the same answer
vs
If you dreamed with me the same answer

Who’s with me, changing the past participle to dreamt? :D

Tonight at work

@o@ Tonight was a kinda crazy night at work.

First thing I should note is that we have Inventory on Monday and Tuesday. Anyone that has worked retail knows what a nightmare inventory is… and well, we’re gearing up! That means we have to go through everything and get it all pretty and shit. Make sure it has tags and whatnot.

So, there was a pile of stuff that needed to be marked out of stock/to be thrown away, and I didn’t know how to do it. (I’ve yet to be taught and I kinda disagree with the practice) so me and the 27 (POS Supervisor) made a plan at the beginning of the night: she would come back to C/S and do it, and I’d play the role of 27 for a bit.

Well, then one of the POS closers called in. Uh oh. Looks like the 27′ll be on register for the last 2 hours.

Then the Shoes person called in. Uh oh. Thank goodness we had multiple people in Misses tonight, so we’ll move one person over to Shoes.

Then the other POS closer goes home sick. She’s puking. Uh oh. Now what do we do?

So what ended up happening is that, at about 9:00ish, I went up to POS, Christin (the 27) went back to Customer Service, and Laurel the manager took over the other side of POS, cuz we couldn’t afford to pull anyone from the department.

So, yeah, it got weird. What should technically be 5 positions was covered by 3 of us.

The poor openers are gonna be horribly confused, because:
@ c/s: I closed one drawer, Christin closed the other 3
@ pos: I closed 8 of the drawers, Laurel closed 4
@ jewelry: Christin closed one drawer, and Laurel closed the other

It was kinda crazy fun. :-)

When we wrote our “Smile” counts on the sheet, Christin put for her position “27(ish)” and I wrote “C/s(ish)” hehe :)

Webhosting

So, earlier, Jedi_Amara sent me an e-mail saying that she was dropping out of the server.

Well, I guess that doesn’t make a big deal – but it does get me thinking even more seriously about something.

Do I really need a dedicated server anymore?

Initially, it was grabbed basically for fansubbing purposes. Over at DATS, we used it quite a bit. Hell, we still have probably close to 100GB worth of fansub shit on the server. Well, the group is dead. I’m in school, Ryan’s gonna be in school soon… it’s kinda a moot point.

What I basically use the server for, now:
1) This blog / rest of the random stuff on my aRM domain (old websites, etc.)
2) Wikimon
3) Golden Sun Universe
4) DATS forums

Yeah, that’s pretty much it. So I should be theoretically able to drop down to a VPS, or something. Something that won’t cost me at least $55 a month.

I dunno :s Webhosting is so expensive, and I feel like I’m putting out so much and not getting anything in return. I’m only $30 into my next Google Ads… :(

Blog Updates

Hey, nothing *really* big, but I thought I’d make a few mentions here:

We have the official Twitter button, and I’m going to try and make it more useful. For instance, on the I Am Tama, Lucky Cat, I’ve done it up so that when you tweet, it’ll say
Review of I Am Tama, Lucky Cat by @PeachtreePub http://t.co/k6oyzGz via @aredmoon
Instead of just
I Am Tama, Lucky Cat http://t.co/k6oyzGz via @aredmoon

And it also suggests to follow them. :) So it’ll hopefully make the aRM Twitter experience more useful! I’ll try and do it for all of the new reviews in the future.

And though it doesn’t matter so much on the front-end, I’ve added the “Jetpack” plug-in, which gives me better stats and whatnot. It also has some other toys, but I dunno what all will be of use here. :S

My current reading isn’t going to be correct, tho. I do plan on starting up Naomi and Ely’s soon, but first I want to read another of my galleys :) They’re pretty cool!

Here’s what I have to read… Let me know what you think I should read first!
Bumped by Megan McCafferty.
Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick by Joe Schreiber.
Mercy by Rebecca Lim.
The Goddess Test by Aimée Carter

It’s spring break so I wanna get at least two of them read! :-D

I Am Tama, Lucky Cat

So, if you follow me on Twitter (which you should!!!) you probably noticed this tweet, a few weeks back:
Just read a galley of “Tama, the Lucky Cat” to be published by @PeachtreePub – absolutely gorgeous!!!!! :):):)

It was through this really cool service, Netgalley where people in the book business (reviewers, book sellers, etc.) have a chance to read early editions so that we can write reviews. Since I review (not much, but I want to do more!) and work in a bookstore (The school Bookstore!) I decided to sign up.

You go and request various titles, and the first one that I got accepted into reading was I Am Tama, Lucky Cat by Wendy Henrichs, illustrated by Yoshiko Jaeggi.

It is at this point that I encourage you to look to the left, and see the cover on the Amazon listing. There’s your first taste of this piece of beauty.

It’s based on a Japanese legend, where a cat finds a broken down temple. He lives with the priest there, and they’re quite content. However, one rainy day, the cat goes outside and sits on the porch. Up comes a samurai, who upon seeing the temple, decides he’d be happier (and drier!) staying under a tree.

Tama, as he had been christened, raised his paw up, beckoning the samurai and his horse forward. The samurai comes forward, and right then, lightning strikes the tree and a huge branch falls down – right where the samurai had been.

In essence, Tama saved this samurai’s life. In thanks, the samurai restored the temple and helped it to prosper.

The writing is gorgeous, and the illustrations complement it PERFECTLY. I’m no art guy, but I’m pretty sure they are watercolors, and each page is full of this full-color, gorgeous pictures. I’d post more from the book, but I’m not sure if it’s legal. You’ll just have to wait ’til August to see them!

Yeah, we’re going to have to wait until August for the book to come out, but you’re welcome to pre-order on Amazon. Link’s above :)

But continuing on, each page is full of these spreads, picturing each sentence, bringing each and every line to life. And it all fits under the Japanese legend. When the lightning strikes, it’s said to be thrown by two Gods in the sky, and we’re shown pictures of these gholish characters.

It’s being published by Peachtree Publishers and is due out on August 1, 2011. Tweet at them and let them know you’re looking forward to it! :) They replied to me!

Flash Burnout

While back, Heidi Kling, author of the book Sea, tweeted a recommendation list. As you can see from the link, one of them was Flash Burnout by L. K. Madigan.

I favorited that tweet, and when I finally had the Oomph to do something about it, I ordered the book.

Thanks to Amazon’s fast 2 day shipping, I got it pretty quick, and delve into it.

The story focuses on Blake. He’s got two girls in his life – Shannon, his girlfriend. She’s pretty, gorgeous, everything a boy could ask for. He might just possibly be in love. And then there’s Marissa. She’s a friend from his photo class. Just a friend.

But that all changes when he goes to a badder part of town and takes a picture of a passed out lady on the sidewalk. Marissa sees the picture – it’s her mom. And thus begins the search, in more ways than one, for Marissa’s mom.

As Blake gets pulled farther and farther into the personal life of Marissa, his relationship with Shannon becomes a little shakey. But it’s okay – they love each other, and they’ll get through it all… right?

Blake’s a boy we can all relate to. He’s just trying to get through life – maybe get laid on the side. But there are things that just have to be dealt with, things that he can’t turn away from. When Marissa’s life starts to slowly fall apart, Blake is going to be the one to pick it back up. It’s just a matter of if what he does will endanger his own life’s stability…

The book is good. You could almost say it’s a series of photographs. We have Blake and Shannon, and then Marissa’s mom, and Blake and Marissa… and Marissa and her mom. We have Blake’s brother and the screwed up girl he’s “seeing”, who’s a piece of pie herself.

I don’t know what else to say. It’s a good book – very much worth the $8 that Amazon wants for it.

When I tweeted Heidi to let her know that I was reading it – and enjoying it – a few days ago, and she replied
@aredmoon So glad you love. Did you hear the author recently passed away? So very sad. Her book is a masterpiece, will live on forever.

So, Lisa, here’s a post-mortem “Bravo!” for you. I hope you keep writing stories up there in Heaven, so that we’ll all have something good to read when we join you. :)

Songs for a Teenage Nomad

So, here’s my first review in quite awhile: Songs of a Teenage Nomad by Kim Culbertson.

First off, if you don’t like music, don’t even bother. If you like music, it’s okay. If you LOVE music, especially older stuff, you’ll get an amazing kick out of the book.

The book centers around a girl, Calle. She lives with her mother and Boyfriend/Husband of the Week. They’ve moved more times than Calle can talk, and it’s always after the guy breaks her mom’s heart.

This time she’s moved to a spot where she actually finds some friends that seem worth keeping. She fits into the drama clique; she’s helping to build the set (eventually earning title, I believe, of Assistant Stage Manager) and just getting to know the guys and gals.

The book revolves around Calle’s interactions with her mother – why do they have to move so much? What’s so wrong with her that all the guys leave? – interactions with her friends – what do you do when your friend likes you, and you don’t like him back? – and then with the other oddball guys. You have Sam, the jock who is more than he seems. (Possibly) And Cass, this rather bitchy type girl, who might have a bit of a heart.

Calle wraps this all together in her journal, which is how each chapter begins. She keeps a song journal, in which she writes down a song and then what was happening when she heard it. So, when she hears the song again, she’ll be reminded.

That’s the key music part of it. Each chapter has this song, and it’s kind of an overbearing theme. So, if you’re into older music, you’ll really be able to appreciate it. If you’re not so much, but you at least *know* them, like me, it’s a nice little extra.

So, yeah – go grab it. :) I’ll give it a 3.5/5!

Bieber Volume & Shamisen Subs

Just to let everyone know, in case you were looking for them, both domains have expired, and I have no intent on renewing them.

They were fun while they lasted… now if only QC would finish that layout for magykl.net :)

Maybe she would be more likely to if I sent her the box of stuff…

Who says you’re not perfect?

Well, if that isn’t the question.

In her new single, Selena addresses the matter. You can hear the song (one of her better ones, I have to say) here.

I should take a moment and say yeah, I don’t listen to the best music. I don’t listen to the stuff that’ll last through ages. I mean, come on, my playlist features mainly Bieber, Devon Werkheiser, Gaga, and the new Britney Spears song. I’ve had a couple of Selena’s songs on there too. But you know what? I can’t say I really care.

Music is something that appeals to different people in different way. Some like voices – I’ll listen to anything by Alex Band because his voice amazes me. Some like styles – who can deny the beat that reverberates through Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance? Some like personality – I think Greyson Chance has an amazing personality, and that makes him worth following. Yeah, he’s jumping on the Bieber bandwagon (little boys ftw) but he has a GOOD voice, and if you watch him in videos, he’s a bubbly, GOOD kid. He’s doing it because he wants to.

I feel the same way about Disney singers. Sure, Mitchel Musso doesn’t have an amazing voice. In fact, it’s rather cringe worthy – but he’s going out there, even with that HUGE stigma against Disney singers, and putting out a couple albums. They deserve to be listened to.

And sometimes, the lyrics far outweigh any bad voices. I’m not a big fan of the music style of Born this Way, but the lyrics are amazing. Same with a number of Musso’s songs – the voice is “Eh” but the lyrics. :D I can relate to them. Like The In Crowd. I’ve always been a bit of a loner, and that’s why I enjoy the song.

Because I can relate.

So yeah, just basically a rant here about how a person’s music choices really doesn’t say much about them, but at the same time, it says a LOT. My two sisters listen to some weird ass shit, but that’s because they’re weird ass kids. They listen to what appeals to THEM, what THEY like – not what other people like. And so it just PISSES ME OFF when people talk bad about others because they listen to Disney singers, or to Bieber. It’s like hair style. Yeah, it might be butt-ass ugly to you, but to me… hey, I like it. So bug off.

I transcribed the lyrics for Who Says. You can read them here, and instead of just scoffing at who it is – read them. Can you relate?

All Time Low

This is a low kick to the nuts.

Since I have started this blog (yes, STARTED) I have had 3,000 more visits to the Percy/Nico page than I have had to the homepage.

WTF.
